What is a “Certified Traditional Naturopath”?

The word naturopath can be broken into two parts.  Naturo means Nature and Pathology means Body, therefore Naturopathy means healing the body through nature. Naturopathic Licensure was passed by the United States Congress on February 7, 1931.  Naturopathy, by the original licensure, gives one the rights to support the body with food, water, heat, light, color, sound, vibration, air, and exercise, etc.  A Traditional Naturopath does not diagnose disease, prescribe drugs (pharmaceuticals) nor administer surgery.

Wellness health care places emphasis on nutritional support, diet, exercise, positive attitude, etc.  As a wellness healthcare provider and a wellness healthcare educator, Dr. Hurley believes in supporting the body and its’ systems so that it may function at an optimum level of balance.  It has been determined that there are six interferences to health and wellness. We know how to identify the six interferences and will be able to instruct you as to how to correct those interferences.  By correcting the interferences, optimum health and wellness can be achieved and sustained.

Introduction to Functional Diagnosis                                    By: Dicken Weatherby, ND

Most people who seek medical care, especially from a practitioner trained in Complementary and Alternative Medicine do not have a clinically identifiable disease.  Patients coming to us have usually been told that everything looks normal based on the standard tests run by their doctor.  As practitioners we know that most of our patients are by no means normal, but are a long way from being in an optimal state of health.  So why use diagnostic tools and standard interpretations that are designed to identify disease states and pathology only?  Shouldn’t we use interpretive and diagnostic methods that can help us assess a wide range of problems that are more suggestive of subclinical or functional problems?

Many patients fall through the cracks of the current medical paradigm because they are neither sick from a pathological perspective, nor 100% well.  These patients fall into a gray area of medicine.  This gray area is the area of dysfunction and Functional diagnosis is one of the best ways to sleuth out what is truly going on.  By doing this we have an incredible opportunity to make changes long before true pathology sets in.

An example of this is blood sugar deregulation, which is becoming an epidemic in Western industrialized societies.  Blood sugar deregulation occurs along a spectrum of time.  On the one end we have the beginnings of hypoglycemia.  On the other end we have Type 2 Diabetes.  No one wakes up as a Type 2 Diabetic with first traversing along this spectrum.  However, there are a few methodologies used in standard western medicine to help evaluate where along the spectrum one might be.  At some point a doctor may tell a patient that they are pre-diabetic.  This may be too late.  With functional diagnosis we can see the trend towards diabetes very early by looking at the gray area.  The blood glucose levels are not so high that I am worried about Diabetes, but they are high enough, and there are significant signs and symptoms of dysglycemia that I want to begin a treatment plan to address the tendency towards blood sugar deregulation.

With functional diagnosis, we can look for aberrations in physiology, make adjustments in the treatment plan, check to see we are going in the right direction, and make a significant change in our patient’s lives.

Medicine and health care are undergoing a paradigm shift.  We are seeing more and more demand from our patients to look at their complex cases from a holistic rather than a mechanistic or reductionist perspective.  In order to do this we need to have diagnostic methods that focus on physiological function as a marker of health, rather than merely the presence of pathology or tissue change as a marker of disease.  The following lists the differences between a reductionist, pathological view of the body, and the view of the body as functioning physiology.

  • Body is dynamic, complex interconnected system of mind, body, and emotions
  • Emphasis is placed on identifying area of imbalance or dysfunction
  • Diagnosis integrates data from many different systems and methods
  • Treatment addresses the underlying cause of dysfunction
  • Major focus spent on subjective and objective information that is gathered based on optimal functioning
  • Allows for early prediction of dysfunction
  • Health is measures along wellness continuum, measuring from health to disease

  • Body viewed as a machine, composed of separate systems and their constituent parts.
  • Emphasis is placed on the identification of disease or pathological tissue change
  • Diagnosis is extremely specialized
  • Treatment is based on reducing symptoms
  • Major focus on how patient is doing based on charts, statistics, and test results.  Measured against “Normal”
  • Relies on late stage development of disease as a marker
  • Health is measures as an absence of disease. As long as you do not have a disease, you are considered healthy.

What are the six interferences of health?

There are six keys to creating superior health. The answer to 'how do you live a healthy life in an unhealthy world' is the Six Steps to Wellness. This comprehensive program – the result of thirty five years of intensive research – is your key to better health.

The Six Steps to Wellness are:

  • Structure
  • Electrical Pollution
  • Nutritional deficiencies
  • Emotional Stress
  • Toxins
  • Allergies, Intolerances and Sensitivities

  • What can be done to correct structural interferences?

Your body’s structure consists of bones, muscles, tendons, meridians, which are the electrical pathways of the body’s acupuncture system, nerves and connective tissue called fascia.  Nerve and Structural interference happens when nerves or tissues are interfered with causing the life energy, which flows through them, to be blocked by trauma from accidents, fractures, surgery, emotional stress, etc.  To reestablish structural integrity, we use many therapies like percussion, acupuncture, cold lasers, cranial sacral work, visceral manipulation, fascia and neuromuscular massage as well as incorporating rehabilitative exercise.

  •  What is electrical pollution?

Humans are Electro/Magnetic beings.  Your body has at least 50 trillion cells.  If your cells are healthy, they produce about -70mV of electricity.  Physics tell us that where there is electricity, there is also a magnetic field.  If you have an area of continued pain, the cells may have dropped voltage to -50mV.  If there is cancer, cysts, polyps, tumors or scar tissue, then the voltage can be reduced to -15mV.  Reduced energy at the cellular level can cause pain, disease and ultimately, death.  We live in a world of electromagnetic pollution.  There are power lines, appliances, computers, cell phones, ipods, and pagers to name a few common polluters.  We can balance the electro/magnetics of the body with the use of many devices:  Multi-polar magnets, Pulsed Electro/Magnetic Field therapies, Scalar technology with Teslar chips and ST8/Light Beam Therapies to name just a few.

  •  What about nutritional deficiencies?

The standard American Diet contains foods that have been grown on depleted soils that do not provide us with proper nutrition.  We are eating foods that are genetically modified which means they are like “Frankenstein Foods”, manmade or “not from nature.”  Foods are aged from transport and the extended time spent in markets can also lower nutritional value.  Most people do not get enough fruits and vegetables in their diet which would give one nutrients, phytonutrients and ample fiber.  “University research shows that an average of 50% of people taking multivitamins, are still nutritionally deficient”.  We use time honored analyses to determine nutritional deficiencies, inadequacies, and toxicities.  Some of the analyses used are Fingernail, Tongue, Hair, Live-Blood Cell, Saliva, Serum, Stool, and Urine, as well as we offer Blood Chemistry Nutrition test that measures the functional ranges of the body’s pathology.  Once the nutrition to support the body has been determined, we provide superior, pharmaceutical grade, standardized nutrition and regularly check to see that optimum support is sufficient to meet their individual needs.

  •  How does emotional stress affect us?

Emotional stress is the number one reason for an unbalanced electromagnetic system.  When stressed, the body goes into an alarmed state called Sympathetic Nervous System overdrive which causes pH levels to become more acidic, cortisol levels to rise, blood pressure to rise, pulse rate to increase.  Your conscious mind and subconscious mind are “divisions” of the nervous system.  If you “think” a thought, you are using your conscious brain.  If you “feel” an emotion, you are using your sub-conscious brain.  Once thought or felt, the thought or feeling has now become matter and matter cannot be destroyed, but it can be changed.  Originally, we develop our “perceptions from our parents’ behavior and our surrounding environment. “Learned perceptions” are not always accurate. Self-limiting belief systems originate this way and can override basic survival instincts.  Perceptions and beliefs are stored as memory and are held in the electromagnetic field we call our mind. The goal is to get the body to make its’ actions based on thoughts (consciousness) instead of feelings (sub-consciousness).  Example:  if the action needed were to cross a busy street, using a thought, one would wait for traffic to pass.  If using a feeling (sub-consciousness), seeing a small puppy run into traffic would cause you to follow.  The feeling based action could get you hurt or killed-hence the saying: “Think before you act”.  There are many therapies that help to remove self-limiting belief systems.  We use many ways to re-write script for our emotions or feelings: Color, light, sound therapies, Ocular Release, Shock Release, Lasers, Positive Point Therapy, 5 Minute Phobia Cure, 7 Deadly Fears, Flower Remedies, Guided Imagery, and Neuro-Associative Conditioning.

  • What do I need to know about toxins?

A toxin by definition is anything that is injurious, destructive or fatal.

We are eating, drinking, and breathing toxins daily. You can also add to that list electrical pollutants and toxic emotions. Humans will always be exposed to both internal and external toxins. Toxins negatively impact the health of our body, mind, and spirit. For this reason, we need to be proactive in our detoxification processes to maintain a balanced life.

  •  What can you tell us about allergies sensitivities and intolerances?

It is estimated that at least 35 million people in the US suffer from allergies.  One can become allergic, intolerant or sensitive to anything at anytime of their life.  Allergic reaction can mimic a wide variety of disease and disorders and can lead to a confused immune system or a stressed lymphatic system.  As we identify the substances which cause the sensitivities, we use therapies like Allergy Sensitivity Elimination Reprogramming techniques as well as lymphatic support therapies and incorporate rotation diets.
