What is a colonic?
A colonic cleanses your colon to improve health. Your colon, also referred to as your large intestines, is a hollow tube that absorbs water from food waste, and it holds until you have a bowel movement.
Like many people, you may think that having one bowel movement a day is normal. However, when stool sits in your bowel, your colon may be overexposed to the toxic substances it’s trying to get rid of. A toxic colon can lead to a number of health problems.
Ideally, you should have a bowel movement as many times a day as you eat to prevent your toxic stool from sitting too long and creating health issues.
Why would I need a colonic?
Dr. Hurley may suggest a colonic after you come in for a consultation. A toxic colon not only causes bowel pain and indigestion but may also cause other symptoms, such as:
- Frequent headaches or backaches
- Skin problems
- Lowered resistance to infection
- Fatigue, insomnia, or irritability
- Edema or swelling
- Low sex drive
- Loss of memory or depression
- Food allergies
- Weight issues, such as overweight or underweight
- Body aches and pains
- Frequent yeast infections, athlete's foot, or jock itch
- Lack of energy
Just like it takes time for these symptoms to develop, it also takes time to reverse the damage. To improve your health and wellness, Dr. Hurley may suggest a series of colonics to help restore balance.
What can I expect during a colonic?
Hurley Wellness & Hyperbaric Center uses Colenz®, a revolutionary FDA-approved colon cleansing system that’s both safe and gentle, and gives you the privacy you need. Your colonic may take about 30 minutes.
To perform the cleanse, you, the patient will administer your own tube, no bigger than a pencil, in your rectum, and then run water through the system and into your colon. The insertion process is extremely easy and our staff is here to assist if needed. Dr. Hurley reviews how to use Colenz and, when you’re comfortable with the process, has you conduct your own colonic. The instructions for how to use Colenz are clearly posted too, so there’s no need to worry if you forget a step.
The Colenz is equipped with a water fan spray from both sides of the basin, which continually washes away your feces as it collects at the bottom of the basin. Once you’ve completed your colonic, the feces is inspected and may be tested for parasites or bacteria.
