Menopause Q & A

What is menopause?

Menopause is the transitional point in a woman’s life that marks the end of her fertility. You officially reach menopause when you’ve gone 12 months without your period. The average age of menopause for women in the United States is 51, although you may reach menopause in your 40s or late 50s.

Before you’re officially in menopause, your hormone levels may begin to fluctuate and cause a number of symptoms, including

  • Hot flashes or night sweats
  • Fatigue or depression
  • Weight gain
  • Hair thinning
  • Vaginal dryness or low sex drive
  • Moodiness

Menopausal symptoms also cause irregularities in your menstruation. You may skip one month or several months of menstruation before you reach menopause.

In addition to the symptoms you physically feel, a shift in your hormone levels may lead to additional health risks, such as heart disease and osteoporosis.

What is hormone analysis?

To assess hormone levels and help you better understand what’s happening to your body, Dr. Hurley offers hormone analysis to women approaching and in menopause. Testing may include:

Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH)

FSH is produced by your pituitary gland and regulates the release of hormones from your ovaries. An elevated FSH may indicate menopause.

The estradiol test assesses estrogen levels. A decreased estradiol level usually coincides with an elevated FSH.

Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH)

TSH is also produced by your pituitary gland and is a test that assesses thyroid function. Thyroid conditions often cause the same symptoms as menopause and may also be tested to ensure your thyroid is functioning normally.

What can I expect during nutrition therapy?

Dr. Hurley is a holistic health coach and naturopath who provides patients with the education and tools they need to take responsibility for their own health and wellness. Good nutrition is an important aspect of your overall health and may help you gain control over the symptoms caused by the fluctuation in your hormone levels.

Dr. Hurley develops a personalized nutrition plan that matches your hormonal and biological needs. When designing your plan, she also takes into consideration your current diet and lifestyle.

Following Dr. Hurley’s nutrition plan may help you feel better, lose weight, and reduce your risk of developing health issues related to menopause.
